Social responsibility

Social responsibility

As the main public transport operator and leading employer of the Brussels-Capital Region, STIB contributes to the big issues of society by making its network accessible to all, including people with reduced mobility, prioritising passenger comfort and safety and diversifying the services offered to its customers (car-sharing, bicycle parking, etc.). STIB is also involved in renewing dialogue with the local fabric by including it in the consultation process, among other things when putting in place sustainable development strategies. It raises awareness among the general public about the importance of sustainable development in an urban environment. Finally, STIB encourages diversity among its employees, which is seen as a valuable resource for the enterprise.

Multimodality

STIB offers its customers a real choice of transport, combining metro, car and bicycle as well as the transport services of other operators. This is an aim that STIB has been pursuing for several years and that took off particularly well in 2007. Ten new Cambio car-sharing stations opened and the number of facilities for cyclists increased.

PRM

STIB is particularly attentive to improving its network's accessibility. The philosophy adopted by the company is inspired by the general principles of the UN Convention for people with disabilities.

Human resources

More than 7,000 people work for STIB. These human resources are a valuable asset for the enterprise. In order to guarantee that its operational needs are fulfilled, while watching over the well-being of its stafl, STIB has to take up the challenge of matching profiles more closely with the skills required in the context of changing structures and missions. This challenge is particularly significant with regard to the cultural and professional diversity of the enterprise: nearly 270 different kinds of job and 28 nationalities. Human resources account for nearly 80% of the annual running costs of the enterprise. So, the stakes are very high. The main challenges that have to be met by the enterprise include elaborating  continuous training programs meeting its needs, promoting the jobs, diversity and values of the enterprise, hiring new and qualified employees and earning their loyalty.

A partner of urban life

STIB wants to be more than a means of transportation from point A to point B. It intends to become a true partner of city life and sustainable mobility in Brussels. This goal is illustrated in its different communication campaigns and its slogan "City life begins with STIB".
While STIB will continue to promote its assets – speed, no parking problems, an alternative to traffic jams and stress - it also wants to show that public transport is part of an increasingly "trendy" urban approach. Its communication strategy makes a bet on an emotional appeal to better win the hearts of its current and future customers. STIB is the pleasure of discovering the city differently, of simply living better.
